Speaking to bufc.co.uk, Mr Newton said: “It has been a difficult season so far. We were not satisfied with the progress being made under Jason Lee and felt that a change was needed. It was also felt that it had to be done reasonably early in the season to give the incoming manager a chance of delivering a bright end to the campaign.

“Following a very rigorous interview process, Graham Drury was appointed. He had a good track record and interviewed well. Therefore we were very happy to appoint Graham to the role.

“Despite a lot of hard work from Graham, things did not go well and with only two wins from 13 games, the board became very aware that we were nearing a relegation battle, rather than the hoped late surge for the play-offs.

“The decision was therefore taken to terminate Graham’s contract. This was a difficult decision as Graham had only been in place for a matter of weeks. However, we felt that action needed to be taken to try to ensure our survival in Blue Square Bet North.

“If we were safe in the league, we would have considered giving Graham the summer to plan for next season but unfortunately we did not have that luxury.

“We would like to put on record our thanks to Graham, plus Paul Holden and Dean West, for their hard work during their limited time at the club. I am sure they will all have a good share of success in the future and we are sorry that things did not work out for them at Boston United.

“It was felt that we needed a new manager to take control of team affairs immediately as there were only 10 games left for us to try to get the points needed to ensure we avoid relegation.

“After we interviewed at the end of last year, the final appointment was made only after much debate over two candidates — Graham Drury and Dennis Greene.

“It was decided that that we should contact Dennis to see if he was still interested in the role. He confirmed he was and we subsequently interviewed him again on Monday evening.

“Following our discussions, we were very happy to offer the role to Dennis until the end of the season, with a chance of him being offered a contract for next season if things progress well. Dennis accepted without hesitation and we were delighted when his tenure got under way with a resounding 4-0 win on Tuesday evening and more importantly three valuable points were gained.

“With our current league position, the board do feel that we have let the fans of Boston United down somewhat this season. However, when things have not been moving in the right direction we have acted to try to rectify things.

“Although the attendance on Tuesday evening was low by our usual standards, the atmosphere was fantastic right from the off. The Town Enders were in full voice (and quite funny too) and it really did lift the spirits of everyone at the game.

“With the past few difficult weeks, the directors were very humbled by the level of support and we cannot thank everyone enough. We were so pleased that the team put in a very good performance, kept a clean sheet and scored four goals to reward such great support.

“We can assure you that we will continue to do all we can to turn things around. The finances are very tight at the present time, so we would ask as many fans as possible to come along to the remaining games which will help finances as we reach the final throes of the season.

“A number of players commented about the great atmosphere on Tuesday and how it helped during the game, so it would be great if we could keep that going and give Dennis and the whole squad the best possible chance of finishing the season on a high.

“Once again, we apologise for not delivering a better season for you — the supporters — but with your ongoing support, hopefully we will be playing in Blue Square Bet North again next season, where the aim will be to deliver a much more successful season for you all.”
