Boston United Centre of Excellence hosted the third annual Pilgrim Cup tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

Staged at RAF College Cranwell with glorious weather conditions over the weekend, over 80 Centre of Excellence and elite development sides took part — making it the most successful tournament in three years of existence.

On Saturday the under-9s took centre stage — the first year hosting this age group. With both Boston sides narrowly missing the knockout stage, the semi-finals saw Doncaster Rovers play Grimsby Town and Lincoln City A play Lincoln City B. The final saw a Lincolnshire derby as Grimsby Town faced Lincoln City A and after a tight 0-0 draw, Lincoln City A won 3-2 on penalties.

The under-11s contested three group stages with the Boston sides failing to qualify. The semi-finals saw Grimsby Town play Leicester City’s development side, Northants Junior Foxes, while the other semi saw an all Doncaster Rovers tie with the A team playing their B team. The final saw Doncaster Rovers win 3-0 against Grimsby Town.

The under-13s saw the two Boston sides again narrowly missing the knockout stages. The semi-finals witnessed Northants Junior Foxes beating York City B 2-0 and York City A beating Lincoln City 1-0. The final resulted in York City A lifting the title, beating Northants Junior Foxes 1-0.

Finally on Saturday the under-15s tournament saw Personal Best Soccer beat York City on penalties in the first semi-final while Boston United reached the final beating local rivals Lincoln City. A tight final saw Personal Best Soccer beat Boston United on penalties.

On Sunday the under-10s produced an all-Doncaster Rovers semi-final with the A team winning 5-4 on penalties after a 0-0 draw. The other semi saw Lincoln City B beat AFC Rushden & Diamonds 4-1. Boston’s sides missed out on qualification. The under-10s title went to Doncaster Rovers A beating Lincoln City 1-0.

The under-12s category saw a local derby in the first semi-final with Boston United B beating Lincoln City while Grimsby Town B beat SDUK in the other semi-final. A close final saw Grimsby Town beat their Lincolnshire rivals Boston United B 2-0.

The under-14s age group again saw Boston United B qualify for the semi-finals playing York City while King’s Lynn entertained Lincoln City. The final was an all-Lincolnshire affair with Lincoln City beating Boston United B 1-0.

Finally the under-16s saw a tight group with Boston United playing Libero Academy in the first semi-final while Chelmsford City played Camberley Town in the other semi. A close final saw Boston United beat Camberley Town 1-0 with an excellent finish towards the end to lift the Pilgrim Cup.

It was an excellent tournament with a high calibre of football played over the weekend.

The fourth annual Pilgrim Cup will be staged in 2013.
