Staged at RAF College Cranwell with glorious weather conditions over the weekend, over 80 Centre of Excellence and elite development sides took part — making it the most successful tournament in three years of existence.
On Saturday the under-9s took centre stage — the first year hosting this age group. With both Boston sides narrowly missing the knockout stage, the semi-finals saw Doncaster Rovers play Grimsby Town and Lincoln City A play Lincoln City B. The final saw a Lincolnshire derby as Grimsby Town faced Lincoln City A and after a tight 0-0 draw, Lincoln City A won 3-2 on penalties.
The under-11s contested three group stages with the Boston sides failing to qualify. The semi-finals saw Grimsby Town play Leicester City’s development side, Northants Junior Foxes, while the other semi saw an all Doncaster Rovers tie with the A team playing their B team. The final saw Doncaster Rovers win 3-0 against Grimsby Town.
The under-13s saw the two Boston sides again narrowly missing the knockout stages. The semi-finals witnessed Northants Junior Foxes beating York City B 2-0 and York City A beating Lincoln City 1-0. The final resulted in York City A lifting the title, beating Northants Junior Foxes 1-0.
Finally on Saturday the under-15s tournament saw Personal Best Soccer beat York City on penalties in the first semi-final while Boston United reached the final beating local rivals Lincoln City. A tight final saw Personal Best Soccer beat Boston United on penalties.
On Sunday the under-10s produced an all-Doncaster Rovers semi-final with the A team winning 5-4 on penalties after a 0-0 draw. The other semi saw Lincoln City B beat AFC Rushden & Diamonds 4-1. Boston’s sides missed out on qualification. The under-10s title went to Doncaster Rovers A beating Lincoln City 1-0.
The under-12s category saw a local derby in the first semi-final with Boston United B beating Lincoln City while Grimsby Town B beat SDUK in the other semi-final. A close final saw Grimsby Town beat their Lincolnshire rivals Boston United B 2-0.
The under-14s age group again saw Boston United B qualify for the semi-finals playing York City while King’s Lynn entertained Lincoln City. The final was an all-Lincolnshire affair with Lincoln City beating Boston United B 1-0.
Finally the under-16s saw a tight group with Boston United playing Libero Academy in the first semi-final while Chelmsford City played Camberley Town in the other semi. A close final saw Boston United beat Camberley Town 1-0 with an excellent finish towards the end to lift the Pilgrim Cup.
It was an excellent tournament with a high calibre of football played over the weekend.
The fourth annual Pilgrim Cup will be staged in 2013.
