Boston United have submitted their ‘goal of the season’ contender to the Football Conference for consideration.

Following consultation with supporters, the overwhelming choice as the Pilgrims’ best goal of the campaign was Ben Fairclough’s 35th minute strike against Chester FC on September 15.

Fairclough flicked the ball over the head of onrushing goalkeeper John Danby before firing home exquisitely from an improbable angle as United eventually went on to win 3-2 at The Jakemans Stadium.

Footage of Fairclough’s strike can be viewed here.

The Fairclough goal will now be added to submissions from the other 67 clubs in the Football Conference — with the winner to be announced at the annual AGM and dinner at Celtic Manor over the weekend of June 8 and 9.

Other goals under consideration from a United perspective were Marc Newsham’s excellent effort at FC Halifax Town and Ian Ross’ piledriver at home to Bishop’s Stortford.
