The Pilgrims prevailed courtesy of goals from Marc Newsham, Ben Fairclough and Nathan Stainfield.

The Posh, whose line-up featured three established first teamers, had levelled three minutes after half-time through Levi Wright.

It was another encouraging step towards the Pilgrims’ opening day clash at Droylsden as Jason Lee and Graham Hyde got valuable game time into their new-look squad.

Boston were dominant from the start and Posh keeper Joe Day had to deny Spencer Weir-Daley early on, while the same player some curled an effort off target. Newsham lobbed too high from 20 yards following Gareth Jelleyman’s assist.

Former Manchester United starlet Nicky Ajose carried Posh’s greatest threat and was wide with an effort at the mid-point of the first half. Ajose was then denied by Dan Haystead as the half progressed.

Boston took the lead on 37 minutes when NEWSHAM looped home a header following Jason Stokes’ deep cross from the right.

Newsham and Weir-Daley were both denied in the closing stages of the half, while Haystead was called upon to keep out Ajose in the final act before half-time.

Posh levelled three minutes after half-time, with WRIGHT wriggling round Haystead to roll the ball home from close-range.

The Pilgrims, boosted by a flurry of fresh legs at half-time, carried the fight to their young opponents and Newsham’s shot was hacked off the line by Charlie Butt, while Stainfield rattled the bar from an Ian Ross corner.

The home side reasserted their advantage on 66 minutes with FAIRCLOUGH showing real composure to crash a rising drive past Day and into the net via the underside of the crossbar — moments after Haystead had made an excellent save to keep out an Ajose header.

The victory was sealed on 71 minutes with STAINFIELD powerfully heading home another Ross flag-kick.

Trialist Korey Dyer-Stewart was handed a late cameo and drove the ball wide with his best chance in the closing stages.
