Barai nets wonder strike as Pilgrims hit six past Gainsborough
Boston United Ladies maintained their 11 point lead at the top of the Lincolnshire County Womens League thanks to a wonder strike from midfielder Demi Barai.
The Pilgrims were back in action for the first time since 8th October and started the game brightly.
Captain Steph Powell converted the first goal after 4 minutes with a fine header from a Tracey Duxbury- Mead free Kick.....
A minute later from some 60 yards out, Demi Barai quickly latched on to a loose ball 10 yards inside her own half and instinctively took an early shot. Her venomous left footed strike left the Gainsborough keeper left rooted only to watch the ball sail over her head and in to the net to receive applause from all around the pitch.
The Pilgrims raced in to a 4-0 lead with further strikes by Tracey Duxbury- Mead and Vicki Bradford.
Just before the break, Gainsborough pulled a goal back when their left winger got in behind the full back and struck a looping shot that keeper Olivia Clark could only get a hand to it and not keep the shot out. This was the first goal the ladies had conceded this season in 489 minutes of football.
After the break the hosts grew in confidence and got more involved in the game and started to create more attacks.
On the hour Vicki Bradford extended the Pilgrims lead with a well taken finish to make it 1-5.
On 62 minutes new signing Holly Wilson who recently was with Nottingham Forest Ladies was introduced, and made a positive impact on the game with some good link up play with full back Rachael Howes.
A few moments later....a controversial moment in the game where the Gainsborough attacker appeared to push defender Becky Taylor in the back which allowed the home attacker clear through on goal for her to convert with a well taken finish to score their second goal of the afternoon.
In the final few moments substitute Ellie Spendelow converted Boston’s sixth goal of following excellent work down the right by Holly Wilson.
A well earned victory for the Pilgrims against a much improved Gainsborough side from who they faced only a few weeks ago.
