The two sides served up entertaining fare inside the first three quarters of the contest although 20 substitutions by the mid-point of the second period disrupted proceedings.
Scott Garner and Jamie McGhee went closest for United, while Mikey Drennan and Daniel Johnson carried the biggest threat for Villa.
Dennis Greene fielded 23 different players during the 90 minutes, including trialist goalkeeper Matt Gledhill, full-back Jamie Anton and ex-United midfielder Jake Hall.
Visiting keeper Craig Hill saved twice from Scott Garner, as well as tipping over a Stefan Galinski piledriver, while Jamie McGhee stabbed wide in the opening stages.
Drennan wasted Villa's best chances, twice firing off target when well-placed before forcing Gledhill into an excellent save.
Carl Piergianni was required to clear Daniel Johnson's drive off the line while United keeper Sam Vince made an excellent late save to deny substitute Jerell Sellars.
