Boston United and Guiseley served up a six-goal thriller as the Blue Square Bet North campaign concluded on Saturday afternoon.

United led 2-0 at half-time through goals from Spencer Weir-Daley and Marc Newsham and despite Chris Senior cutting the deficit, youngster James Reed added Boston’s third to seemingly wrap up all three points.

Senior however netted his second goal and Matthew Wilson secured a share of the spoils with a thunderbolt three minutes from time.

The match continued the expansive nature of meetings between the two teams over recent years, with both sides seeing a number of chances going begging with the pressure off on the final day of the campaign.

Reed had been handed an opportunity to impress from the start, while outgoing joint manager Lee Canoville was handed the captain’s armband for the day.

Guiseley, who made a number of changes with play-off action looming, started well and the excellent Senior had a drive gathered by Paul Bastock early on.

The Lions went closer still when Joe O’Neill rattled the crossbar, while Bastock again had to deny Senior as Guiseley threatened strongly.

United took the lead, slightly against the run of play, when WEIR-DALEY lashed a rising drive high into Jacob Giles’ net, having got away from Dean Lisles, in the 15th minute.

United stepped on the gas and Ian Ross flashed a free-kick into the side-netting, while Conor Marshall’s inviting right-wing cross was slammed just wide at the near post by Newsham.

Boston doubled their lead three minutes before half-time. Nathan Stainfield headed goalwards on the end of Ross’ corner and once Giles had mistimed a punch, NEWSHAM bundled the loose ball over the line from close-range.

United almost added a third goal before the break, but Reed advanced to curl an effort a fraction wide from 18 yards.

Guiseley were presented a glorious opportunity to cut the deficit three minutes after half-time, when Stainfield fouled Senior in the box, but Simon Baldry’s driven penalty flashed to safety off the crossbar.

Senior then rattled the crossbar himself, with O’Neill converting the rebound from an offside position. Bastock was forced into a sprawling save to keep out SENIOR, but the lively Guiseley striker soon had his side back in contention with an expertly-taken angled finish on 54 minutes.

At the other end, Weir-Daley was only denied by a terrific Lisles challenge, while Newsham’s drive deflected through to Giles off the same Guiseley defender.

Bastock made saves to keep out Senior and Jason Price, before reacting well on the line to keep out substitute Danny Forrest.

Lisles produced another terrific block to deny substitute Josh Burge from eight yards, but the Pilgrims were soon further to the good. Newsham excelled down the right to play in REED and he made no mistake with a low drive from 18 yards which flew past the grasp of Giles.

Guiseley were back in contention again when on-loan Alfreton Town frontman SENIOR rolled home another excellent angled finish.

And the comeback was complete when another Alfreton loanee — WILSON — crashed home a brilliant left-footed effort from fully 25 yards which gave Bastock no chance.
