Striker Ricky Miller bagged a first half hat-trick as Boston United got the better of Workington in an eight-goal thriller on Tuesday evening.

Miller handed United an early lead, before hauling the Pilgrims level and restoring their advantage before the break, following Dan Wordsworth and Joe Jackson replies for the Reds.

Jackson equalised again from the penalty spot after the break and the match appeared to be heading for a draw until the returning Ryan Semple and Marc Newsham scored a goal apiece in the last 10 minutes.

Workington defied their lowly position in Skrill North and could easily have made the long return journey to Cumbria with at least a point.

Both sides went into the match missing regular players and two rejigged line-ups took the field at The Jakemans Stadium.

United keeper Lewis King made a save with his legs to deny David Lynch early on, before United edged ahead on six minutes, with MILLER seeing his firm angled drive deflect and loop up over a stranded Luke Simpson in the Workington goal.

Semple emerged from the bench three minutes later, with Indy Aujla limping off with a hamstring injury.

It threw United out of their early rhythm and Rene Steer and keeper King and to make crucial blocks from Wordsworth and Curtis Haley from a Reds' corner.

The visitors levelled on 21 minutes when Valter Fernandes' terrific sweeping right-wing cross was slammed home by centre-half WORDSWORTH who had found himself in an advanced position.

Six minutes later, the Reds moved in front with a lovely angled finish from JACKSON nestling into the bottom corner to give King no chance.

Workington's lead lasted only four minutes though, with Scott Garner slipping MILLER through to beat Simpson with a neat dinked finish.

United were back in front six minutes before the break when MILLER completed his second hat-trick in United colours after Carl Piergianni and Garner had both been denied from a Boston corner.

King made a superb save to keep out Haley's header before half-time, but the Reds were level three minutes after the break, with JACKSON sending King the wrong way from the spot after Rene Steer's foul inside the box.

Workington threatened to retake the lead with the experienced Skelton cracking a 25-yarder only a fraction wide, while Ben Milnes went even closer for Boston with a long distance drive which moved off target at the last second.

With time running out, Boston finally got themselves back in front. Hesitancy between Bruno Fernandes and keeper Simpson allowed SEMPLE to meet Garner's flick and guide the ball underneath the Workington custodian.

NEWSHAM then rattled home his 17th goal of the season, with seven minutes remaining, after Miller had been upended in the box by Valter Fernandes. Newsham's spot-kick kissed both posts but hit the back of the net to seal United's eighth home win of the campaign.

There was still time for Newsham to plant a header over the bar from a Charley Sanders cross, but United were home and dry despite a mighty scare.
