Bottom side Workington caused a major upset by securing a first-ever home league win over Boston United on Saturday afternoon.

Ben McKenna's 85th minute strike handed the Reds all three points despite a dominant United performance at Borough Park.

Stefan Galinski rattled the post for the Pilgrims before half-time, while home keeper Danijel Nizic produced heroics to deny Liam Agnew, Marc Newsham and Jamie McGhee after the break.

With Lewis King and Carl Piergianni sidelined through suspension, Sam Vince and Galinski were their replacements, while Conor Marshal was preferred to Spencer Weir-Daley with McGhee pushed further forward.

The match got off to a cagey start although United threatened first with Galinski advancing to thump a 25-yarder against the Workington post.

Newsham's header was then parried wide by Nizic following David Ferguson's cross.

United had to contend with a strong head wind during the first half and emerged for the second period with renewed vigour.

Ricky Miller and Marshall had shots blocked, while Ian Ross blasted wide from distance.

Nizic made a sensational save to keep the scoreline blank after Agnew had plucked the ball from the sky before swivelling and volleying goalwards from 20 yards.

The on-loan Burnley goalkeeper made another crucial intervention to deny Newsham who had wriggled clean through, before keeping out McGhee's stinging near post drive.

Disaster struck for United with five minutes to play when Scott Garner's clearance rebounded kindly for McKENNA who steadied himself before firing an unstoppable effort beyond Vince's grasp.

Substitute Weir-Daley blazed a late snapshot fractionally wide, but the shell-shocked Pilgrims were unable to muster an equaliser.
