Three second half goals in a six-minute period kept Boston United's play-off hopes alive after a stirring comeback saw off plucky Stalybridge Celtic.

The relegation battlers held the lead from the 20th minute through Joel Bembo-Leta and United saw a host of chances go begging, including Ricky Miller squandering a first half penalty and rattling the bar after the break.

Junior Konadu finally drew United level with 17 minutes to play and when Spencer Weir-Daley put the Pilgrims in front four minutes later, it was left to substitute Ben Milnes to blast home two goals of his own to add some gloss to the scoreline.

The match was preceded by a minute's silence to mark the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, while the game kicked off at 3.07pm.

The early stages were cagey, with United's Jay Dowie seeing a drive deflected behind for a corner by the head of Celtic defender Matt Regan in one of few clear-cut chances in the opening throes.

Celtic took the lead when Tom Buckley delivered a ball from the left, with Jack Ryan heading against the post and BEMBO-LETA applying the finishing touch from close-range before somersaulting into celebration with the home fans.

United were presented with a glorious chance to equalise on 33 minutes when Miller was brought down in the box by Oliver Crowley, but the United top scorer blazed his free-kick wide of Jack Cookson's right-hand upright, with the keeper diving to his left.

The Pilgrims were much-improved after the break and Jamie McGhee crashed a fizzing drive over the bar from 22 yards from Miller's assist.

United carved out another great opening with McGhee delivering a deep free-kick from the left and Scott Garner nodding a fraction too high at the back post.

Chances continued to arrive, with Cookson excelling to deny Miller, who then planted a long-range looping header over the bar while Carl Piergianni headed wide from Konadu's free-kick.

Miller subsequently rattled the crossbar with a ferocious 30-yarder before the Pilgrims finally levelled with KONADU gliding goalwards before sending his 25-yarder home via a deflection off Bembo-Leta.

United took the lead on 77 minutes with substitute Stefan Galinski clipping a long ball over Crowley's head, with WEIR-DALEY running on to angle a brilliant finish across Cookson and into the far corner.

The amazing turnaround continued apace two minutes later with Konadu laying a short free-kick into the path of MILNES who advanced into the box before rifling past Cookson at his near post.

The transformation was complete in the final minute when Ian Ross played in MILNES to run on and finish well and maintain United's hopes of finishing in the top five.
