United fan set for major fundraiser

Craig Singleton24 May 2013 - 07:20

Boston United supporter Mark Dickinson is undertaking a major fundraising effort in June.

He takes up the story...

BLIND MAN CYCLING ACROSS BRITAIN: My Story
In 2007 I was diagnosed with rare genetic eye condition Stargarts Macular Dystrophy. This causes a loss of central vision and in 2009, I became registered blind. I have rebuilt my life with the superb framework of friends, family and the support of my employers. It is time to challenge myself to the limits and help raise funds for other people less fortunate than myself.

WHAT AM I DOING?
To become the first blind person to complete the Deloitte Ride across Britain — the UK’s Ultimate Cycle Challenge: John O’Groats to Land’s End in nine days between June 8-16 and aiming to raise £250,000. The full route is 960 miles broken in to nine daily stages averaging 106 miles per day. One of the classic cycling challenges on the planet Britain is beautiful but it is also hilly. Riders climb around 15,000m over the nine days — that is around 13 times up Alpe d’Huez.

WHO AM I DOING IT FOR? - THE OUTWARD BOUND TRUST
The Outward Bound Trust is an educational charity and the UK’s leading provider of bursary-assisted outdoor learning. Over a million people have now benefited from the life lessons and survival skills of The Trust and the lessons learned are as valuable and relevant today as they where all those years ago. Aware of the importance of such memories and skills gained by participants since 1941: “We aim to help young people realise their potential through learning in the wild. We create a supportive and challenging environment in which young people can learn about themselves and see clearly, perhaps for the first time, what they might truly be capable of achieving in life.”

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Please sponsor Mark on this challenging event by donating to this link to help raise funds for outward bounds and improve the lives of many.
