Boston United failed to recover from conceding twice within the opening 10 minutes as hosts Darlington claimed a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.

The Quakers led through early goals from Tyrone O'Neill and Adam Campbell but United reduced the arrears within eight minutes through Dominic Knowles' fourth goal of the campaign.

United applied plenty of late pressure at Blackwell Meadows but were unable to find a way through.

Ahead of kick-off, Jay Rollins had been preferred to Lincoln City loanee Jordan Adebayo-Smith as the Pilgrims chased a fourth consecutive clean sheet in all competitions.

Simon Ainge, playing against his parent club, sent an early header over the Darlington crossbar following Nicky Walker’s corner, but the Pilgrims soon found themselves chasing the game.

The Quakers took a seventh minute lead when O’NEILL produced some fancy footwork to glide into the United penalty area and stab the ball past Peter Crook.

The home side scored again three minutes later when CAMPBELL picked his spot with a curling effort into the top corner after Crook had failed to deal with Jarrett Rivers’ initial cross from the right.

United cut the deficit within eight minutes when Darlington failed to clear Rollins’ cross from the right and KNOWLES lifted home an expert finish with his left foot to give Elliott’s side renewed hope.

The Pilgrims introduced Andi Thanoj and debutant Martyn Woolford after the break and subsequently enjoyed plenty of the ball.

O’Neill chipped an effort wide for the hosts, while Crook excelled to keep out Campbell’s curling drive midway through the second period.

United gradually upped the ante and Alex Storey had to block bravely to thwart Jordan Thewlis, who in turn saw his angled drive inadvertently stopped by Rollins, who was in turn flagged offside.

There was still time for Knowles to glance a header wide from a Woolford corner, as the Pilgrims were beaten by the clock.
