Not since the summer of 2006 have the Pilgrims opened a season at a higher level – at a time they were last league opponents of Rochdale.

Since the clubs' last meetings in the Emirates FA Cup in 2019, Rochdale have been relegated twice and are gearing up for their second campaign in the National League.

All eyes will be on United manager Ian Culverhouse's team selection – with a number of players having impressed during the pre-season build-up.

One player who will not feature for the Pilgrims is defender Kieran Coates, who continues to miss out with an eye injury.

Rochdale, managed by Jimmy McNulty, could include former Pilgrims' loanee Kyron Gordon, amid a squad packed with EFL and National League experience.
