RIP John Blackwell 1947-2025

Craig Singleton4 Aug - 08:20

Boston United are devastated to announce the passing of club president John Blackwell, aged 77.

The man affectionately dubbed as 'Mr Boston United' due to his lifelong dedication to the club retired from a full-time position in 2016 before spending the next nine years as president.

He remained a regular watcher of the Pilgrims, home and away, and was present at Maidenhead United on the final day of the 2024-2025 campaign.

John started his full-time position with the Pilgrims in 1978 and served as club secretary and general manager up until May 2016.

He served as a Football League secretary for five years - and helped keep the club alive during the turbulent summer of 2007, which culminated in the Chestnut Homes takeover.

Working alongside wife Maureen for much of that time, who retired herself in 2020 as the club moved stadiums, John was a well-known and widely-respected face across the game.

The club extend their deepest condolences to Maureen, Lisa, Katie, David and Matt at this extremely sad time.

A book of condolence will be opened at the Jakemans Community Stadium over the coming days for supporters wishing to pay their own tribute to a United stalwart.

RIP John…
