United ready for opening day showdown

United ready for opening day showdown

Craig Singleton1 Aug 2019 - 20:59

Boston United will kick-off their final campaign at York Street on Saturday with Chester FC providing the opening day opposition (kick-off 3.00pm).

One year on from their 1-0 victory over Guiseley on the opening day, the Pilgrims will be aiming to make it back-to-back first day successes when they tackle a Blues side managed by Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley.

Chester finished two places and four points better off than the Pilgrims in 2018-2019 and have brought in former United loanee James Jones over the summer months.

Ex-Cestrians George Green and Shaun Tuton are among nine players hoping to make their league debuts for the Pilgrims, alongside fellow newcomers Tom Clare, Jordan Thewlis and Jake Wright who appeared on loan for United last season.

Dominic Knowles' involvement will be determined ahead of kick-off following pre-season calf troubles while utility man Jonathan Wafula is ruled out through a knee injury.

All eyes will be on the goalkeeping position to see whether reigning player of the year George Willis or newcomer Peter Crook gets the nod to start between the posts.

Last season's corresponding fixture ended 2-0 to the visitors, who went on to record a 4-1 home win over the Pilgrims later in the campaign.

Saturday's match referee is Aaron Bannister, who took charge of three United matches last season (at home to Blyth Spartans and Chorley and away at Alfreton Town).

Matchday updates for those not in attendance will be published on Twitter via @bostonunited — starting with team news at 2.00pm.
