Update – A16 Stewarding

Update – A16 Stewarding

Craig Singleton21 Nov 2023 - 12:25

Boston United have issued an update in relation to stewarding on the A16.

We have received comments regarding stewards working beyond the boundary of the stadium on matchdays.

There has been concern for a while that pedestrians have been using the grass verge along the side of the A16, which of course is not ideal.

When planning events (including a matchday), we have an obligation to consider how people access the stadium beyond the actual perimeter of the stadium (this is called Zone Ex). This is something that has been discussed at the Safety Advisory Group meetings recently and is of concern.

We absolutely do not have 'jurisdiction' beyond the stadium perimeter, but we do have a duty to try to manage an identified risk, and all we are trying to do is to advise visitors to use the public footpath rather than the grass verge.

The verge can be slippery and is immediately adjacent to the A16 carriageway, which of course has a 60mph speed limit. There is a footpath across the road, which is well lit and safely sited away from the carriageway.

All we are trying to do is keep everyone safe and meet our legal responsibilities as a venue. We would advise all visitors to use the public footpath rather than walk down the verge.

We have also been asked why the emergency access onto Tytton Lane East could not be used. This has been assessed in the past and we do not believe that it would be a safe option. Opening the emergency gate would encourage fans to leave the ground by walking through a busy car park, while at the same time cars are exiting in the opposite direction.

We always keep the stadium operation under review with the Safety Advisory Group and overall it operates well with everyone's co-operation, however we will always consider any comments or suggestions made. We hope this clarifies things.
