League sponsors Vanarama offer some answers about the actual importance of the start to the season

Boston fans might feel they’ve been here before. It’s mid-September, mid-table and perhaps not looking like the go-to guys if you want to back a promotion winner.
Last season was exactly the same. Wasn’t it?

On the face of it, you’d be absolutely right. They’re in the same league position and are roughly on the same points – but that’s where the similarities end.
We’ve been stat hunting as we try to make sense of the Vanarama National League North season so far.

Consistency is what’s been lacking in Lincolnshire for the past few years. Take 2017-18 for example, 17 wins and 16 defeats. 2018-19 was a similar picture, 17 wins, 18 losses.
But Craig Elliott might have this season’s crop of Boston boys bucking the trend. They’ve won four of their opening games, drawn four and only lost twice. Take those miserable afternoons out and it’s a pretty solid start.

They’ve also scored three more goals than last year at the same point, boosted by a huge result against Altrincham.

That being said, is there actually any evidence that suggests a good start is in any way that important?

You’ve only got to look back to this time last season for a conclusive answer.
Would-be champions Stockport County were down in mid-table, anyone mentioning titles would’ve been laughed out of Edgeley Park.

Chorley on the other hand were the division’s runaway leaders with 28 points out of a possible 30. They finished the season in second.

Blyth Spartans also had nothing to smile about. After their first then, they’d chalked up just seven points and were only outside the drop-zone on goal difference. Alun Armstrong turned the ship around and made the play-offs!

Can Boston banish the inconsistencies of season’s gone by and be playing National League football in their brand-new stadium next season?
