Sleaford Town 0-6 Boston United

Craig Singleton17 Jul 2012 - 22:55

Sharp shooters Spencer Weir-Daley and Marc Newsham both netted twice as Boston United romped to a six-goal win in their opening pre-season friendly.

The Pilgrims were 6-0 victors over Sleaford Town at Eslaforde Park on Tuesday evening, with Kallum Smith also on target.

Ash Murrell had opened the scoring with a long-range own goal as Jason Lee’s evolving squad proved too strong for the United Counties League side.

With 15 registered players supplemented by seven individuals chasing first team deals in 2012-2013, the Pilgrims were quickly out of the blocks.

United took the lead with 10 minutes on the clock. MURRELL got his angles completely wrong 20 yards from goal and as he attempted to head the ball back to Will Jones, it flew over the keeper’s head and into an empty net.

The lead was doubled within two minutes as WEIR-DALEY turned the ball home from close-range following an incisive run from Ben Fairclough down the right.

James Reed was not afraid to try his luck from distance, while Mark Jones went close too, but it was Sleaford who came close to registering on the scoresheet when Jamie Shaw rattled the crossbar with a firmly-struck free-kick.

United added their third goal on 32 minutes when Jones and WEIR-DALEY linked up with the latter finishing with aplomb from 18 yards.

Lee made 11 changes at the break and NEWSHAM tapped home goal number four only five minutes into the half following a surging run from Kieren Joseph.

Goal number five arrived on 76 minutes with SMITH capping a lively cameo performance with a neat finish following Newsham’s sheer persistence in forcing the home defence into a scuffed clearance.

And the scoring was completed two minutes later with NEWSHAM curling home a lovely finish following Ben Milnes’ precise throughball.

Boston (second half, 4-4-2): Ricky Drury; Lewis Sturman, Tom Ward, Travis Munn, Jason Field; Joe French, Ben Milnes, Liam Bull, Kallum Smith; Kieren Joseph, Marc Newsham.
