Against a largely youthful Hull City side, the Pilgrims produced a hugely creditable performance that thoroughly merited a draw — thanks to a cheeky last-gasp equaliser.
Up to stoppage time, the visitors looked like having the edge with two Johnny Margetts close range finishes having overturned a cracking early strike by Joe French (pictured).
But with almost the last kick of the match, Ian Ross equalised with an astute piece of quick thinking from a 20-yard free-kick.
Boston got off to the best possible start when FRENCH took possession some 25 yards out on the right and unleashed a ferocious rising drive that flashed into the far top corner beyond the reach of Hull keeper Mark Oxley. But, within 60 seconds the visitors were level when an unmarked MARGETTS tapped in from six yards after being picked out by a good cross from the right by Jamie Devitt — the latter having jinked past two United challenges.
Boston answered with an off-target drive by Spencer Weir-Daley then, at the other end, Margetts again went close with a header from a Bryan Hughes corner.
The Tigers pressed again and Hughes twice almost put them ahead — seeing a clever 22nd minute chip shot tipped over by Dan Haystead and then clipping a curling effort against the bar from the resulting short corner.
Both sides then had one more chance apiece before the interval with Jordan Nuttell heading over from a Jason Stokes cross and then, in reply, Devitt shooting straight at Haystead.
Hull went ahead in the 59th minute when MARGETTS was on target again, this time converting a cross from the left by Marc Cullen.
But United answered positively with a series of good build-ups and several near misses.
On 64 minutes Mark Jones broke free only to see keeper Oxley make a fine save. Then, in quick succession, Ben Milnes tested Oxley and marc Newsham was thwarted by a fine goalline clearance by Sonny Bradley.
Trialist Korey Dyer-Street drilled wide after a good mazy run and Jones fired too high on 84 minutes.
Then, with stoppage time ticking in, Danny East fouled Newsham. And with Hull organising their defensive wall, ROSS got the okay from referee Darren Drysdale to take a quick free-kick and promptly slotted the ball into a gaping net to seal a 2-2 result.
