Strikers Ricky Miller and Spencer Weir-Daley grabbed two goals apiece as Boston United brushed aside the challenge of Stafford Rangers in the FA Cup.

United held a 2-0 half-time lead and wrapped up their victory with two further goals after the break.

The result booked United’s place in the third qualifying round, with the draw taking place on Monday.

United suffered a double blow ahead of kick-off, with Scott Garner and top scorer Marc Newsham both ruled out. Newsham’s absence ended a run of 74 successive starting appearances for the striker.

Stafford, struggling in the Evo-Stik Premier Division but on a five-match unbeaten run in all competitions, carved out the game’s first real opening with Danny Quinn firing across goal and wide.

United went close for the first time when Miller had a shot blocked and Ben Milnes’ follow-up was parried by keeper Jonathan Brain, following good initial play from Ben Fairclough.

The Pilgrims took the lead after 18 minutes. Milnes slipped MILLER into the clear and he finished well in a one-on-one situation with Brain.

Milnes almost went from provider to scorer, but fired wide following Conor Marshall’s cross from the left.

United doubled their lead on 29 minutes. Full-back Michael Carr was penalised for a foul on Miller and WEIR-DALEY, in the absence of regular penalty taker Newsham, blasted the ball beyond Brain from the spot.

Stafford captain Darren Bullock had a header tipped over by Ashley Timms in response, before glancing another header wide from the resulting James McCarthy corner.

The United chances continued to arrive. Miller’s shot was beaten away by Brain, before Bullock heroically blocked Milnes’ rebound, while Brain soon denied the increasingly-involved Fairclough.

Miller and Milnes both blasted long-range efforts over the bar as half-time approached.

United replaced the injured Marshall at the break and full-back Peter Bore departed four minutes later with a jarred back. Debutant Indy Aujla and teenager James Reed were the respective replacements from the bench.

Boston were looking for a killer third goal and Fairclough headed wide from an Aujla cross, while Brain saved well to deny Netan Sansara at the back post.

The excellent Carl Piergianni headed too high from an Ian Ross corner, while Fairclough had an effort disallowed for offside.

United sealed their route into the next round when WEIR-DALEY scored the goal of the game in the 66th minute with a brilliant 22-yard strike which had too much power for Brain.

The Pilgrims added their final goal 10 minutes from time when MILLER applied an angled finish following Sansara’s assist.

There was still time for Sam Vince to make a late appearance from the bench in place of Timms — in United’s first goalkeeping substitution since May 2001.

United could have added even further to their tally, but Sansara rattled the outside of the post and Weir-Daley teed up Fairclough who was denied by Brain before Bullock cleared off the line from Miller to deny the United man his hat-trick.
