Second half goals from Liam Shotton and Niall Maguire dumped Boston United off the FA Cup trail on Saturday afternoon.

The Leek Town duo handed the Evo-Stik Division One South underdogs a deserved 2-0 victory at Harrison Park.

There were plenty of chances for both sides during a goalless first half but Leek eventually prevailed courtesy of 53rd and 68th minute strikes and United were unable to muster a response.

With Lincoln City duo Paul Farman and Conner Robinson ineligible and Zak Mills and Carl Piergianni available again, United showed six changes to the side beaten by Hednesford Town seven days previously.

Sam Vince started in goal and was called upon inside 71 seconds to thwart Shotton with his legs.

United soon settled and enjoyed a 20-minute spell where they could have put the tie beyond doubt. Scott Garner's drive was stopped on the line by keeper Ben Chapman following Mills' long throw before the home stopper excelled to keep out a rising drive from United's captain following a crisp Boston move.

Piergianni and Dayle Southwell then forced Kyle Dixon's corner goalwards and Marc Newsham's header flew agonisingly wide.

Chapman made another excellent stop to keep out Piergianni's header, with Newsham forcing the rebound over the bar.

Leek created a handful of chances leading up to the break. Andy Kinsey was denied bravely by Vince and Shotton stabbed the ball over an empty net while Rene Steer was forced to clear off the line from Maguire with Vince grounded in a later chance for the hosts.

Matt Bell's fizzing drive then flashed across goal and wide as Town closed the half on top.

Leek's breakthrough arrived eight minutes into the second half with SHOTTON having the simple task of tapping the ball home at the back post following Danny Smith's driven cross.

Town wrapped up their victory following a catalogue of United errors and MAGUIRE swept the ball into an unguarded net with 22 minutes to play.

United huffed and puffed in the final quarter, but never seriously tested Chapman as their involvement in the FA Cup meekly ended for another year.
