Boston United booked their place in the Emirates FA Cup first round draw after battling their way to a stalemate at Chorley on Saturday afternoon.

The Pilgrims were good value for earning their replay on Tuesday evening after a resilient performance at Victory Park.

United had to battle through the closing stages with only 10 men after Jan Yeomans was dismissed for alleged violent conduct.

The Pilgrims, deploying three at the back, repelled two Adam Blakeman efforts from a 21st minute free-kick.

United subsequently broke at speed with James Clifton playing Gregg Smith into the clear, but the big striker fired his effort across goal and wide.

Clifton then blasted a free-kick goalwards which was fumbled by Matt Urwin, only for the Magpies to get enough bodies around the ball in response to quell any further danger.

Josh O’Keefe’s drive on the stroke of half-time nestled wide as Chorley closed the half on top.

The Magpies were on the front foot again after the interval, with Nick Haughton and Scott Leather both blasting wide from distance.

Clifton had another free-kick blocked by the Chorley wall before the game erupted into life.

Yeomans tumbled in the Chorley box as he got a shot away, but referee Tom Parsons waved away United’s penalty appeals. The Magpies countered and once Clifton had been penalised for a foul on Haughton, a melee broke out involving players from both sides. Yeomans was handed his marching orders after being deemed to have thrown a headbutt.

United attempted to shut up shop, with Jordan Keane dropping into a back four and substitute Ashley Hemmings had a free-kick blocked with his first touch after replacing a tiring Smith.

Chorley cranked up the pressure in the dying moments, with O’Keefe heading narrowly over and Jamie McGuire producing a terrific block to thwart Blakeman.
