Jake Wright Jnr's ninth minute opener was quickly cancelled out and overturned by strikes from Jack Foalle and Liam Henderson - only for Scott Duxbury and Danny Elliott to both strike in first half stoppage time to hand United an interval lead.
Liam Noble buried a soft penalty award seven minutes after the break and Foalle won it for the hosts with a 70th minute header as United were unable to respond. United's woes were compounded when Wright Jnr was red-carded after the final whistle for alleged foul and abusive language towards referee Andrew Miller.
WRIGHT JNR had already squandered two early chances by the time he struck in the ninth minute - tapping home Elliott's cross from the United right.
Home keeper Dan Lowson made a fine save to deny Elliott a second for United and Morpeth duly levelled in the 26th minute when FOALLE linked up with Joe Walton before arrowing a fine effort high to Marcus Dewhurst's right.
The hosts took the lead four minutes later when Liam HENDERSON crashed home a beauty from 25 yards following Ryan Donaldson's headed assist.
United lost the services of Wright Jnr to a hamstring injury, with James Hanson making his debut from the bench, and the Pilgrims turned the contest around in added time at the end of the first half.
DUXBURY hooked home Shane Byrne's corner to level proceedings and then ELLIOTT waltzed through to round Lowson and roll United back into the lead.
Morpeth made it 3-3 seven minutes after the break when Miller awarded the Highwaymen a soft penalty following a tussle between Matt Tootle and Liam Henderson - and NOBLE buried the penalty despite a strong hand from Dewhurst.
FOALLE steered home what ultimately turned out to be Morpeth's winner with 20 minutes to play - after Tootle's attempted clearance had looped up kindly off Liam Henderson.
Hanson was denied a debut equaliser by Foalle's goalline clearance and Jeff Henderson made a brilliant interception to thwart Elliott, but Dewhurst needed to make excellent saves to deny Foalle and Andrew Johnson, while Foalle and Liam Henderson crashed further efforts off target for the jubilant hosts.
