Jaanai Gordon had fired the Pilgrims into a 20th minute lead, only for Alex Bradley to equalise 18 minutes after the break.

Sam McLintock and Tom Platt scored from the spot, but once Jas Singh had denied Will Atkinson and Jake Wright, Sam Long crashed United’s fifth spot-kick over the bar to seal Tamworth’s triumph.

Showing four changes to the side victorious over Blyth Spartans seven days previously, with Lebrun Mbeka and Tom Solanke notably cup-tied, United started well on Tamworth's 3G surface.

The visitors took the lead on 20 minutes when McLintock threaded through a precise ball for GORDON to run on, beat the offside trap and finish beyond Singh with aplomb.

In a keenly-contested tie played out predominantly in the middle ground, chances were few and far between.

Ben Pollock made a brilliant block to deny Alex Jones a near certain equaliser 12 minutes after the break - but BRADLEY curled home a sublime leveller from 25 yards six minutes later.

United responded with Scott Pollock hitting the post following McLintock's assist, while debutant Jo Cummings saw a header parried over the bar by Singh following Jordon Crawford's cross from the right.

There was a late save from Singh to thwart McLintock and despite Long's save to deny Jamie Jellis in the shootout, Jones, Bradley and ex-Pilgrim Ben Milnes sealed the deal for the Lambs.
