Boston United striker Dayle Southwell struck a second half hat-trick as the Pilgrims returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Hyde FC.

Southwell struck on 48, 57 and 73 minutes to seemingly put United on course for a routine win until sloppy defending allowed Joe Conchie to cut the deficit six minutes from time.

Keeper Sam Vince was sent off for violent conduct in the moments after conceding and United had to rely on Notts County loanee Greg Tempest to don the gloves and make two excellent late saves.

Tempest was one of four players brought into the United starting XI alongside Conor Marshall, Michael Hollingsworth and Conner Robinson as Dennis Greene opted to utilise a 4-4-2 formation.

Regular full-backs Zak Mills and Rene Steer were pushed into more advanced wide areas and gave United attacking outlets throughout.

United did receive a let-off after only six minutes when Tom Bentham lashed an effort over the Boston bar after being played in by strike partner Reece Gray.

Marshall was brilliant throughout and started and almost finished an excellent move involving Mills, but could only turn his shot over the bar on the stretch.

Manchester City loanee Billy O'Brien then excelled to claw Steer's header to safety following Southwell's cross from the right.

It was soon Carl Piergianni's turn to threaten the Hyde goal, planting one header wide and seeing another saved by O'Brien following two Tempest corners.

United secured their breakthrough three minutes after the break. Tempest's cross was stabbed home on the line by SOUTHWELL after O'Brien had initially denied Robinson.

The Pilgrims threatened to cut loose with Southwell slamming another effort off target before O'Brien stood tall to deny Robinson.

Vince made an excellent save at the other end to claw Bentham's header aside following Connor Hughes' cross from the right.

United added their second goal when Piergianni headed down Mills' deep cross and SOUTHWELL applied the finishing touch from close-range.

Hollingsworth came close to his first United goal but his flashing drive flew too high following Mills' assist from the right.

United scored their third when SOUTHWELL beat O'Brien at his near post with a firm finish following Tempest's raking throughball.

Mark Jones was introduced for his second United 'debut' on 76 minutes but the real drama was to unfold eight minutes later.

Slack defending allowed CONCHIE to waltz through and roll the ball past an exposed Vince, who then inexplicably kicked out at Hughes as he tried to retrieve the ball from the net. Referee Tom Bramall had no option but to hoist the red card and Tempest took over between the posts.

There were a few nervy moments for United, with Adam Blakeman's shot rattling the bar and Tempest producing an excellent flying save to keep out Steve Tames' drive.

Jones almost capped his comeback with a goal but he drilled too high from 18 yards, while Tempest made another excellent stop to palm Josh Brizell's driven free-kick over the bar for a corner.
