Boston United and Chorley fought out a goalless draw at The Jakemans Stadium on Saturday afternoon to complete their quickfire double-header.

The Pilgrims had the better chances before the break, notably with Mark Jones rattling the crossbar and Aaron Grundy saving superbly to deny Dayle Southwell.

Chances were more at a premium after the break as dense fog started to envelope the stadium and the visitors were reduced to 10 men with seven minutes to play when Harry Winter received his third red card of the season.

The result followed hot-on-the-heels of the Pilgrims' 2-1 win over the Magpies at Victory Park seven days previously.

United were unchanged, but Chorley showed six alterations, and the visitors went close early on when Darren Stephenson blasted goalwards with Joel Dixon grounded and was only denied by Rene Steer's crucial block on the line.

Boston's first chance arrived with Southwell flicking the ball over the bar after Scott Garner had nodded down Liam Marrs' free-kick.

United were presented with a glorious double chance to take the lead when Jones rattled the bar following Greg Tempest's cross and Southwell's follow-up header was saved absolutely superbly by keeper Aaron Grundy.

Referee Declan Ford allowed Chorley a terrific advantage to break from a United offside decision and Marrs blocked brilliantly to deny Stephenson who had looked set to score.

Southwell's hooked effort then dropped agonisingly wide following Kaine Felix's cross from the right.

United started the second half well too despite visibility being reduced due to the worsening fog around the ground. Garner's acrobatic effort deflected wide off Adam Roscoe before the United skipper sent a glancing header wide following Tempest's corner.

Garner subsequently flicked inches wide of the far post following Southwell's driven cross.

Joel Dixon made a routine stop to keep out Roscoe's curling free-kick before excelling to beat away an angled drive from Josh Hine, while Marrs later cleared off the line to deny Chris Simm.

Carl Piergianni sent a towering header fractionally wide for the Pilgrims while Tempest's late cross-shot was inches away from being turned home by substitute Zeph Thomas.

The main talking point of the closing stages arrived on 83 minutes when Winter was handed a straight red card for a crunching challenge on Marrs.
