Boston United's play-off hopes took a dent after suffering a 2-0 defeat at the hands of fellow challengers Guiseley on Saturday afternoon.

Wayne Brooksby and ex-Pilgrim Adam Boyes struck the decisive blows either side of half-time to sink the Pilgrims at Nethermoor Park and boost the Lions' promotion hopes in the meantime.

Sam Vince conceded and subsequently saved an Alex Johnson penalty in stoppage time to prevent the hosts stretching their winning scoreline even further.

It was United's second successive defeat to promotion hopefuls and left Dennis Greene's side playing catch-up in the play-off race.

United had been boosted by the return to fitness of top scorer Dayle Southwell and winger Kaine Felix, but could have found themselves behind inside two minutes if Boyes had got his radar right when manoeuvring into space inside the Boston box.

Southwell soon drifted an effort into the side-netting from Nicky Walker's corner but the Lions took the lead on 20 minutes when Danny Boshell squared the ball for BROOKSBY to virtually walk it into an empty net.

United responded positively and a crucial touch was required from keeper Steven Drench to tip Mark Jones' drive over for a corner following Walker's left-wing cutback. Southwell then blasted narrowly wide following Felix's forceful run.

The Pilgrims were bright from the off after the break and Drench flung himself to his right to beat Walker's drive to safety.

Guiseley grabbed a crucial second goal a minute shy of the hour mark with Vince spilling a high ball and BOYES steering it home into an unguarded net.

United were not without chances in the closing stages, with Drench saving well to deny Kyle Dixon, Rene Steer and Jones firing sighters off target and Ryan Toulson producing a terrific goalline clearance to prevent Southwell scoring from the acutest of angles.

Guiseley exploited gaps in the United rearguard as the match ticked towards a conclusion, with Vince required to produce a good near post save to deny substitute Johnson.

The same two players took centre stage in stoppage time with Vince bringing down Johnson, before responding to parry the striker's penalty to safety.
