Boston United secured a crucial away point against Oxford City on Saturday afternoon to extend their unbeaten run to six games.

Chances were at a premium on a poor pitch at Marsh Lane but Marc Newsham was denied by an Alejandro Santiago goalline clearance, while City's Luke Coulson rattled the crossbar in the second half.

The result left the Pilgrims one point ahead of Easter Monday's opponents Tamworth following their shock home defeat to Gainsborough Trinity.

Newsham had been selected with top scorer Dayle Southwell deemed unable to start two games inside 48 hours as he continues to battle a nagging hip injury.

Newsham's eighth minute drive looked likely to break the deadlock but was hacked off the line by Santiago.

United continued to create and City keeper Salva De La Cruz beat Kyle Dixon's drive to safety following Kaine Felix's cross from the right.

The Pilgrims thought they had taken the lead when Scott Garner netted from close-range, following De La Cruz's save to deny Mark Jones, but the offside flag was promptly raised.

City had the better chances after the break and Marlon Jackson fired narrowly over the bar from close-range following a partially-cleared Oxford corner.

Tom Winters' skidding drive was well gathered by Max Stryjek despite a late bounce before Coulson's free header rattled Stryjek's crossbar following Winters' cross.

Centre-half Lee Henderson's header then flew narrowly wide following Winters' corner while Mo Fofana screwed a 25-yarder wide for City after being afforded too much space to shoot.

United were unable to find a way through a resolute home rearguard although Garner did force De La Cruz into a last-gasp save to keep out his stoppage time header.
