Boston United and Leamington fought out a goalless draw at The Jakemans Stadium on Saturday as the Pilgrims claimed an excellent third place finish.

The Pilgrims, who hit the woodwork through Kaine Felix and Jamie McGhee, were the better team throughout and saw numerous chances go begging.

The draw against already-relegated Leamington set up a midweek trip to Chorley in the first leg of the play-off semi-final.

Dennis Greene had made six changes to his United side with the play-offs in mind and the Pilgrims should have led on four minutes when Felix's drive bounced back off Jonny Maddison's near post following a surging run.

Leamington threatened meaningfully for the first time with Richard Taundry's low free-kick flying narrowly wide.

Marc Newsham's drive was hacked away following Kyle Dixon's corner, while Carl Piergianni, later named player of the year for the Pilgrims, headed the return cross wide.

Felix's angled shot was then hacked off the Leamington line as the rain started to teem down at The Jakemans Stadium.

United went close after the break with McGhee's firm drive taking a deflection and whacking Maddison's crossbar. Piergianni's hooked 12-yard drive then flew over the bar following Zak Mills' long throw.

Newsham headed narrowly over from substitute Mark Jones' right-wing cross, while keeper Maddison did well to deny a clean through Felix.

Leamington missed a glaring chance to snatch the lead when top scorer Danny Newton contrived to plant a free header wide following Nathan Hicks' cross.

United saw Mills blaze over from a late corner, while Felix cleared Maddison's crossbar with one final effort as the spoils were shared.
