Jake Cain and Gwion Edwards set the ball rolling before half-time, before Joe Nuttall added a quickfire brace after half-time, the second of which was a penalty for a Marcel Lavinier handball.

Already missing Jordan Cropper, Jacob Scott, Jordan Richards, Frankie Maguire and Jacob Hazel, centre-half duo Connor Teale and Zak Mills were late omissions through injury, while Alex Lankshear was serving a one-match suspension.

United failed to clear their lines in the 15th minute and CAIN cracked home the game's opening goal from 25 yards.

The Pilgrims responded and forced Jamal Blackman into a fine save to keep out Kieren Donnelly's header from Matty Carson's corner.

Morecambe crucially doubled their lead six minutes before half-time, despite Rhys Lovett's save to deny Jack Nolan, with EDWARDS angling home the rebound.

Carson rattled the post two minutes after half-time - but Morecambe soon decisively took the game away from United. NUTTALL saw his header creep over the line eight minutes into the half - and NUTTALL stroked home from the spot five minutes later after Lavinier had been penalised for handball.
