Solihull Moors 0-2 Boston United

Craig Singleton

Goals from Lennon Wheeldon and Ken Aboh got Boston United up-and-running in the National League on Saturday afternoon.

The Pilgrims' most recent pre-season recruits struck the all-important goals to sink Solihull Moors at Damson Park - and it could have been many more had it not been for the second half heroics of home goalkeeper Max Metcalfe, who denied Tom Cursons from the penalty spot.

Wheeldon handed the Pilgrims a 29th minute lead with a rasping effort off the inside of the post and Aboh wrapped up the points three minutes after the break following Cursons' brilliant assist.

With Jake Rooney serving a one-match suspension, United boss Paul Hurst made three changes ahead of kick-off, including a full debut for Sai Sachdev on the right.

Solihull wasted the game's first two chances, with Joe Sbarra firing wide when well-placed and Scott High wriggling through to blaze across goal and wide.

Referee Dale Baines called for a hydration break midway through the first half and upon the resumption, United took an immediate lead. Lewis Shipley forced his way down the United left and allowed WHEELDON to seize possession and advance to crack home a dipping drive from 25 yards which rippled the net via the inside of the post.

Metcalfe made saves to deny Aboh, Cursons and Terrell Agyemang before the break, while United lost the services of Nicholas Pozo ahead of half-time. Gavan Holohan deputised from the bench to make his debut for the Pilgrims.

United doubled their lead three minutes into the second half, with Cursons brilliantly slipping ABOH into the clear and he composed himself before rolling the ball beyond an onrushing Metcalfe.

Metcalfe saved well to deny Wheeldon, while Cursons, Connor Teale and Aboh all planted efforts over the Solihull crossbar.

The inspired Solihull goalkeeper then made a brilliant double save from Cursons - before denying the same player from the penalty spot after Jamie Andrews' foul on Wheeldon. Cursons' bundled rebound was deemed not to have crossed the line after hitting the post.
