Wheeldon broke the deadlock on the half hour mark with a powerful drive from outside the box - but FC Halifax Town levelled two minutes after the break through the impressive Connor Carty.
It was then left to United to mount a dogged rearguard action against a revitalised Halifax side - with Chadwick making a string of fine saves. His best stops thwarted Shaun Hobson and Tayt Trusty at either end of the half, as the Pilgrims held on.
United started well and saw Tom Cursons drag an effort across goal and wide after being slipped in down the left-hand channel.
Chadwick made comfortable saves to deny Carty and Ben Tollitt, while Max Bardell headed wide at the back post on the end of a deep Cody Johnson corner.
Cursons headed wide from a Georgie Gent cross from the left, before the United left-back played a quick throw-in for WHEEELDON to run on and crack a beauty past True Grant at his near post.
Halifax levelled in the 47th minute when CARTY swivelled neatly in the box to arrow a firm shot into the ground and beyond the reach of Chadwick.
The United keeper then took centre stage - denying Hobson brilliantly a minute later before keeping out Tommy McDermott's header.
He soon denied Cruz Allen and Tollitt again before saving his best save for the 84th minute to claw aside Trusty's glancing header - moments after the same player had clipped the crossbar.
United had a rare chance to nick all three points at the death when Grant fumbled a ball into the box under pressure from Lenell John-Lewis, but fellow sub Jack Holmes was unable to convert.
