Anthony Dudley's first half goal proved to be the difference as Salford City edged out Boston United at The Jakemans Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The visitors, who climbed to the top of the Vanarama National League North standings in the process, prevailed courtesy of Dudley's 30th minute strike.

It ensured a losing start for caretaker manager Karl Hawley, although United more than held their own against their promotion-chasing visitors.

Hawley made four changes to the side which had been beaten by Brackley Town on Saturday in Adam Murray’s final match in charge, including omitting himself for the squad altogether.

Chances were at a premium early on although Salford did threaten with Richie Allen’s drive deflecting wide.

Salford took the lead on the half-hour mark when DUDLEY slotted the ball home, across George Willis, after the Pilgrims had failed to clear their lines.

The Ammies were indebted to keeper Max Crocombe 10 minutes later when he produced the save of the night to thwart Jay Rollins, who had met a long Sam Muggleton throw to fire goalwards. Harry Vince’s subsequent ball back across goal narrowly evaded Rollins at the back post.

Salford had a chance to extend their lead three minutes after half-time with Mike Phenix rifling across goal and wide, while Rollins produced a similar finish at the other end after meeting Ashley Hemmings’ throughball.

The visitors had a goal ruled out in the 55th minute when Jack Redshaw was penalised for offside after meeting Ibou Touray’s driven cross from the left.

Salford soaked up plenty of United pressure during the second period and duly climbed to the top of the pile with another victory and clean sheet on the road.
