Brad McGowan and Ashley Hemmings scored the all-important first half goals as Boston United finally recorded an away league win on Saturday.

The Pilgrims defeated Leamington 2-0 at the Phillips 66 Community Stadium courtesy of McGowan's third minute strike and Hemmings' spot-kick eight minutes before the break.

United had to withstand some sustained second half pressure, with keeper George Willis particularly impressive, but they held on for their first success on the road in the league since March 18.

Caretaker manager Karl Hawley had opted to name an unchanged line-up ahead of kick-off, although Jan Yeomans was back on the bench after suspension.

United took the lead with three minutes played when keeper Tony Breeden misjudged Sam Muggleton’s long throw and McGOWAN reacted quickest to force the ball home from close-range.

Willis got behind Rob Thompson-Brown’s drive in response, with Jack Edwards then heading off target.

Home trio Kieran Dunbar, Junior English and Callum Gittings all went into the notebook of referee Tom Kirk for fouls on midfield marauder Jay Rollins.

James Mace subsequently got the wrong side of Harry Vince as he burst into the Leamington box and in the process of conceding a penalty became the fourth Brakes’ player of the half to be carded.

HEMMINGS coolly dispatched a penalty for the second Saturday running as United extended their lead.

The sides traded glaring chances before the break with Edwards heading off target for the hosts while Vince lifted a clear-cut chance over the bar following James Clifton’s run and unselfish ball inside.

Leamington were much-improved after the break and Conor Gudger crashed an indirect free-kick wide of the near post after Willis had been penalised for picking up a backpass.

Liam Canavan nodded wide and Dunbar blasted across goal and off target as the Brakes cranked up the pressure.

Willis then made two decent saves to deny Dunbar as United held firm.

United regained their attacking poise and Hemmings played Clifton into a shooting position, although the finish was lacking.

Breeden made an excellent save to deny Smith who had rolled English to blast goalwards.

Willis made further saves to thwart Kurtis Revan and ex-Pilgrim Kaine Felix but Boston had a glorious chance in stoppage time to add a third goal and climb out of the bottom three in the process.

Substitute Jack Broadhead attempted to finish off a fine move involving fellow sub Kabongo Tshimanga and Hemmings, but Jamie Hood appeared from nowhere to keep the lead at two and ensure the Pilgrims will be in the drop zone for another week at least.
