Boston United completed a Blue Square Bet North double over Workington following Saturday’s 2-1 win at The Jakemans Stadium.

Headers from Jason Lee and Jordan Burrow helped the Pilgrims come from behind, with Gareth Arnison having opened the scoring for the visitors on 20 minutes.

Lee levelled two minutes before half-time and Burrow swooped five minutes from time to send the Pilgrims sixth in the league table.

With Ben Wilkinson replacing the unavailable Alan White at the back, United showed just one change from the side which had won convincingly at Histon seven days earlier. Lee Canoville moved into the centre of defence

Prior to kick-off, United chairman David Newton and director Chris Cook presented long-serving goalkeeper Paul Bastock with a permanent memento of his 650th appearance for the Pilgrims.

Bastock was soon called into action to palm aside David McNiven’s angled drive in the opening stages.

Workington were bright from the off and deserving of their 20th minute lead. ARNISON surged between Wilkinson and Canoville to drive a low effort beyond Bastock’s grasp and put the Reds one goal up in the process.

Worse almost followed when Bastock dashed from his goal to help out youngster Nathan Stainfield, but Arnison rounded the pair to smash an effort against the post from an ever-increasing angle.

Boston gradually got into their stride and Grimsby Town loanee Sam Mulready — watched from the stands by team-mates and ex-Pilgrims Shaun Pearson, Anthony Church and Anthony Elding — flashed an effort wide.

United equalised two minutes before the break. Ryan Semple, switched to the left flank, cut inside to loft an inviting cross into the path of LEE, who bulleted a close-range header beyond a stranded Aaran Taylor.

The Pilgrims came close again before half-time. Lee nodded down Gareth Jelleyman’s deep cross for Marc Newsham to flick the ball round the corner and Mulready fired wide.

Boston were much brighter after the break and Danny Sleath’s driven 25-yarder was well gathered by Taylor.

The Pilgrims dominated territorially but Workington had chances to retake the lead. Arnison’s low drive was expertly parried by Bastock following Mark Boyd’s corner, while substitute Kevin Austin was well-positioned on the line to nod the ball to safety after Phil McLuckie had beaten Bastock to get on the end of Gari Rowntree’s left-wing centre.

United struck the winning goal with 85 minutes on the clock. Semple and Wilkinson combined down the United right and the latter’s swirling cross was brilliantly headed home, across Taylor, by BURROW.

Semple strode clear to force Taylor into an excellent save in stoppage time and Workington knew the game was up when Arnison whistled a long-range effort far too high in the fourth minute of added time.
