Boston United 6-0 Histon

Craig Singleton21 Aug 2012 - 22:05

As rain and lightning lashed The Jakemans Stadium on Tuesday evening, Boston United whipped up their own Mark Jones-led storm to thump Histon 6-0.

Ben Fairclough, Marc Newsham and Ben Milnes also got in on the act as the Pilgrims ran amok on their rain-soaked home soil.

The result was never in doubt following Jones’ 28th minute breakthrough and goals arrived at regular intervals thereafter.

The summer arrival from Corby Town completed his hat-trick with a well-taken third on 77 minutes and there was still time for substitute Milnes to apply the gloss with a 20-yard bullet in the final minute of normal time.

Histon, who had suffered an opening day defeat to Guiseley, had the game’s first chance with the prolific Dan Holman firing wide from distance.

United gradually upped their game and Histon keeper Calum Kitscha stood tall to deny Newsham’s rising drive, while Jones had a header blocked on the line by George Thomson following an Ian Ross corner.

Fairclough was a lively presence down the United right throughout and he skipped inside the challenge of Danny Fitzsimons to advance on goal. Unfortunately his effort was off target and Kitscha went untroubled.

United did not have to wait too much longer for their breakthrough. Kallum Smith slipped the ball through to JONES and he cut inside to curl a lovely finish around the dive of keeper Kitscha.

Newsham’s 20-yard drive then looped into Kitscha’s grasp via a deflection off defender Max York.

JONES doubled the Pilgrims’ lead on 34 minutes when he drove the ball home from 18 yards following more inventiveness from wing wizard Smith.

Haystead had to be alert to keep out a drive from Holman, after Nathan Stainfield had slipped on the wet turf to allow the hotshot a free run on goal.

United’s third goal arrived from a Histon corner on the stroke of half-time. Kern Miller stabbed the ball away and after Smith had raced clear, he teed up FAIRCLOUGH who delightfully fired the ball across Kitscha, into the far corner, from a tight angle.

Histon went close at the start of the second half, with Theo Ola getting in behind the United defence to stab the ball wide from 12 yards.

United resumed their offensive and once Milnes, on for the rested Ross, had slipped the ball through after a quick free-kick, NEWSHAM lashed the ball high to Kitscha’s right and into the roof of the net.

Boston added their fifth goal when Smith provided another excellent assist from the left and JONES did the rest by guiding home an instinctive left-footed finish from close-range.

Jones was denied further rewards with Kitscha making a top save moments later, before the hat-trick hero rattled the post with Jason Stokes seeing his follow-up charged away by Harri Hawkins.

There was still time for MILNES to get in on the act — drilling the ball home from 20 yards to give Kitscha no chance.
