Leamington 0-4 Boston United

Craig Singleton

Boston United climbed to the top of National League North on matchday one courtesy of a thumping 4-0 victory on the road at Leamington.

Tuesday evening's success at the Phillips 66 Community Stadium was built on set-piece prowess - with all four United goals stemming from dead ball deliveries.

Andi Thanoj was the destroyer-in-chief, supplying the ammunition for Paul Green, Luke Shiels and Scott Garner, with Fraser Preston later turning provider for Jordan Thewlis.

Manager Craig Elliott had opted to make five changes to the side that had defeated AFC Mansfield in Emirates FA Cup action at the weekend, with full-backs Matt Tootle and Scott Duxbury making their United debuts.

Home keeper Jake Weaver was forced into a third minute save to deny Green, following Preston's driven ball from the United left while Leamington fired their first warning shot when Joe Parker angled an effort across goal and narrowly wide.

United's breakthrough arrived six minutes before half-time when GREEN got up in front of Weaver to glance home Thanoj's precise corner delivery.

Jordan Burrow curled a further effort off target as the Pilgrims ended the first half strongly.

Ross Fitzsimons, a spectator for much of the evening despite an earlier booking for a foul on Danny Waldron, pulled off a good save to deny Jack Lane just before the hour mark.

It laid the platform for United going on to clinch all three points in style. SHIELS hooked the ball home from close-range in the 67th minute after Tom Platt had nodded back Thanoj's deep corner and then GARNER got his head on the end of yet another teasing Thanoj delivery, this time from a free-kick, nine minutes later.

United applied the icing to the cake five minutes from time when Preston's free-kick found its way across to THEWLIS, who tapped the ball home from a couple of yards out to complete the scoring.
