Boston United produced a superb performance to dismantle Guiseley 3-0 at The Jakemans Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

After a goalless first half in which Scott Garner was substituted with a nasty facial injury, the Pilgrims took the lead on the hour mark through a Carl Piergianni bullet header.

Marc Newsham capped the victory with strikes on 66 and 90 minutes respectively as United banished their recent woes against the Lions.

United’s afternoon had got off to the worst possible start. Garner was flattened by a flailing arm from Guiseley striker Craig Hobson in the eighth minute. Referee Neil Hair deemed the offence worthy of only a yellow card and Garner, clearly shaken by the incident which damaged teeth, was replaced by Stefan Galinski.

The Pilgrims tried not to let their setback deter them and Newsham soon forced Steven Drench into a sprawling save following a long ball forward from Ashley Timms.

Conor Marshall subsequently drilled too high from distance, before Guiseley carved out two noteworthy chances.

Gavin Rothery dashed goalwards only to be denied by the legs of Timms, while a similar fate soon befell Adam Priestley, who had advanced into a decent goalscoring position.

Spencer Weir-Daley then forced Drench into a fine low stop following Peter Bore’s deep cross from the right.

Ben Milnes tested Drench’s reflexes at the beginning of the second half following a short Ian Ross free-kick and United were soon in front.

Danny Ellis had been booked moments before half-time and Andy Holdsworth and Mark Bower followed after the break — all for desperate fouls on the impressive Ricky Miller.

From Bower’s foul just outside the box, Ross delivered a trademark pinpoint delivery for PIERGIANNI to get up above Guiseley’s caretaker manager to power United into the lead.

Ross sensed blood when he picked up possession inside the Boston half moments later, but his audacious lob flew wide with Drench frantically back-peddling.

United soon extended their lead when Milnes clipped an exquisite crossfield pass into the path of Ross to cross and NEWSHAM was on hand to guide a cushioned, angled header back across Drench and into the far corner.

Miller missed a great chance to kill the game when he blasted a volley over the bar from 12 yards following Piergianni’s headed assist.

Guiseley reminded the Pilgrims that they were still in contention when Holdsworth blasted a fierce free-kick goalwards, but Timms produced an excellent save to keep it out.

United’s dream afternoon was rounded off in stoppage time when Drench saved well following a mazy Miller run and shot, with NEWSHAM lifting the loose ball back over the Guiseley keeper to complete a resounding win.
