Captain Ian Ross marked his 100th appearance for Boston United with a goal and two assists as the Pilgrims beat Gloucester City on Saturday afternoon.

United had trailed to Tyler Weir’s fifth minute penalty, but Ross drew the Pilgrims level with a 34th minute thunderbolt.

Ross delivered two expert set-piece deliveries after the break with Carl Piergianni and Scott Garner applying the finishing touches to seal a deserved away success for United.

The Pilgrims had been forced into two changes ahead of kick-off, with Ben Milnes ruled out with a hamstring injury and Spencer Weir-Daley deemed only fit enough for inclusion on the bench following a neck problem sustained in midweek.

Things had not got off to a good start for United. Ashley Timms came flying from his line to foul Tom Webb and WEIR sent the cautioned Boston keeper the wrong way from the spot.

United tried to respond and Ricky Miller broke down the right, skipped inside the challenge of Jack Harris but was only able to fire tamely at keeper Mike Green.

Miller had a stinging cross-shot palmed to safety by Green moments later, but United were soon level.

ROSS seized possession 25 yard from goal and crashed home a brilliant drive, off the inside of Green’s right-hand post, which flashed along the line and into the net.

City almost re-asserted their lead before half-time, but Darren Mullings cut inside to drill a fraction wide from 20 yards.

United started the second half brightly, with Peter Bore reverting to right-back from a forward role and Stefan Galinski pushing into midfield.

Conor Marshall’s skidding drive was kept out by Green, while Marc Newsham saw a curling effort deflect marginally wide, following an assist from Weir-Daley.

United took the lead from the resulting corner. Ross delivered with his usual accuracy and PIERGIANNI did the rest with a firm header which flew past keeper Green in a flash.

The Pilgrims sealed the match six minutes later from another Ross corner. Bore had advanced to crash a long-range effort wide via a deflection and Ross’ flag-kick was bundled over the line by GARNER.

United were rampant and Miller came close to making it four with a shot-on-the-turn from 25 yards.

City completed the match with 10 men after Darren Edwards was forced off through injury, with all three substitutions made

There was a late United debut for 18-year-old Ngoni Dongo, while City defender Matt Coupe denied Garner a second goal and United a fourth with a heroic stoppage time block.
