Boston United were unable to unlock a resolute Histon defence as the Pilgrims were forced to settle for their first goalless draw in almost two years.

The Pilgrims were held 0-0 at home by the dogged Stutes on Boxing Day, which ensured United's first goalless stalemate since entertaining Nuneaton Town in January 2012.

Ben Milnes rattled the crossbar for the Pilgrims during the first half, while substitute Charley Sanders squandered a great chance in stoppage time, moments after full-back Rene Steer had been sent off for two yellow cards.

The Pilgrims had been forced to cope without the services of strike duo Ricky Miller and Spencer Weir-Daley ahead of kick-off, with both players ruled out through injuries.

Chances were at a premium during the opening stages although United did go close when the recalled Milnes crashed an angled drive against the bar.

Marc Newsham, searching for his 100th United goal, saw a drive parried wide by Calum Kitscha following Ian Ross' precise throughball, before having a close-range header ruled out for a push against Netan Sansara.

United were indebted to keeper Lewis King before the break, with the Boston stopper parrying Lewis Taaffe's drive to safety.

After half-time, Peter Grant glanced a header off the bar following Zak Mills' long throw.

United gradually upped the ante, with Carl Piergianni seeing a header blocked by Mills, Ross' cross charged to safety and substitute Jake Hall having his deflected follow-up held by Kitscha.

Steer was dismissed for his second yellow card as the match entered stoppage time before United's great chance to win it.

Ross' drive was parried aside by Kitscha and Sanders fluffed the follow-up with the game at his mercy.
