Michael Liddle’s 24th minute own goal handed the Pilgrims all three points but the scoreline could have been more comfortable had home keeper Alex Mitchell not denied Danny Elliott from the penalty spot before half-time.
Matt Tootle, Scott Garner, substitute Jake Wright Snr and Scott Duxbury all impressed in a much-changed United backline.
United boss Craig Elliott had opted to make six changes ahead of kick-off, following Tuesday night's exit from the Emirates FA Cup. The decision had the desired effect, as United responded positively, although they did soon lose the services of captain Luke Shiels to a hamstring injury.
After seeing striker Elliott twice denied - with one effort flying wide and one being blocked by keeper Alex Mitchell - the Pilgrims took a 24th minute lead when LIDDLE inadvertently headed the ball past his own goalkeeper, following Joe Leesley's headed ball back across goal.
United were presented with the perfect opportunity to double their lead four minutes before half-time, but after being fouled himself, Elliott saw his low spot-kick held by Mitchell.
Blyth mounted a sustained spell of pressure after the break, but Dan Maguire's drive and Jordan Watson's header both failed to trouble the returning Peter Crook and flew off target.
