Elliott set the ball rolling with a 10th minute penalty after a foul on Tom Platt and although Michael Woods equalised seven minutes later, Byrne won it seven minutes from time after Jake Wright Jnr had been upended by Matty Brown.

United had made just one change ahead of kick-off, with Jake Wright Snr replacing the injured Luke Shiels, although he too failed to complete 90 minutes after also succumbing to a hamstring problem.

The Pilgrims took the lead when Clayton Donaldson hauled down Platt and ELLIOTT banished his Blyth Spartans spot-kick blues by sending Peter Jameson the wrong way from the spot.

York levelled in the 17th minute when Donaldson's long throw was flicked on by Brown and slammed home at the back post by WOODS.

The Minstermen came close again when Mackenzie Heaney whipped in a great ball from the left and Mark Beck's header was heroically diverted over the bar by the covering Wright Snr.

United were on the front foot after the break, with Jameson saving well to deny Fraser Preston before Peter Crook produced the save of the game to turn aside Kurt Willoughby's goalbound effort.

With the match seemingly petering out into a 1-1 draw, Wright Jnr seized proceedings by the scruff of the neck and won a penalty after outfoxing Brown - with BYRNE doing the rest with a clinical conversion from 12 yards.
