The Pilgrims led 1-0 at half-time through Paul Green's first goal of the season, but Chorley produced a rousing second half comeback.
Will Tomlinson levelled from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute and Harry Cardwell appeared to win it for the visitors 14 minutes later - until Wright's crucial late intervention.
United boss Craig Elliott handed a debut to on-loan Sheffield United goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst, while three outfield changes saw Scott Duxbury, Keenan Ferguson and Wright Jnr come into the side.
Chorley started brightly but United twice went close with a Jordan Burrow header dropping wide and Duxbury angling an effort across goal and narrowly off target.
Tomlinson and Jon Ustabasi both failed to trouble Dewhurst from distance before the Pilgrims took a 35th minute lead, with GREEN slamming home Wright Jnr's cross from the left.
Matt Urwin made a fine save to deny Green a second goal before the break, but Chorley levelled eight minutes after half-time when Luke Shiels was adjudged to have fouled substitute Millenic Alli and TOMLINSON rammed home the resulting spot-kick.
The Magpies took the lead in the 67th minute with CARDWELL finished with ease at the near post following a flowing move down the Chorley right.
Substitute Danny Elliott flashed a header narrowly off target, while Dewhurst made a brilliant save to thwart Alli as the match seemed to be in Chorley's grasp - only for WRIGHT JNR to glance home Matt Tootle's left-footed cross from the right with four of the five additional minutes played.
