The Pilgrims trailed to Tom Platt's early own goal, before levelling from the penalty spot through Danny Elliott's 22nd goal of the campaign in a first half interrupted by a calf injury to assistant referee Stuart Richardson.
With local official Craig Forbes deputising on the line, Cedwyn Scott scored a 49th minute winner for the title-chasing Heed.
Jordan Burrow was back in action for the first time in three months - and replaced the injured Ntumba Massanka. Brad Abbott was preferred to Scott Pollock in midfield.
Despite a bright start which saw Joe Leesley fire a free-kick off target, Filip Marschall excel to keep out a Luke Shiels overhead kick and Elliott blaze across goal and wide, it was the visitors who took a seventh minute lead when PLATT planted a firm header past Marcus Dewhurst, following Greg Olley's free-kick delivery.
United levelled nine minutes later when ELLIOTT was brought down in the box - and he picked himself up to calmly roll home the Pilgrims' leveller.
The Pilgrims survived a major scare moments after the break when Macaulay Langstaff crashed an effort into the side-netting - but SCOTT soon had the visitors back in front with a neat 15-yard drive in the 49th minute.
Dewhurst made further saves to deny Owen Bailey and Olley - while Marschall denied Shiels what would have been a sixth goal in six home appearances.
A late flag from Forbes denied Pollock an equaliser, with Fraser Preston adjudged offside.
