Boston United and Kidsgrove Athletic will contest an FA Cup replay after the visitors produced a dogged rearguard action to shackle the Pilgrims.

The Pilgrims were not at their sparkling best but did more than enough to win the contest at The Jakemans Stadium — but were unable to convert one of their chances.

Danny Sleath, Alan White and substitute Jason Lee all went close after the break — but a combination of poor finishing, inspired defending and goalkeeping and bad luck kept the scoreline blank.

Kidsgrove striker Dave Walker was red-carded with 17 minutes remaining following poor challenges on Paul Bastock and Kevin Austin.

Lee opted to relegate himself to the bench ahead of kick-off, with Jordan Burrow getting the nod up front, but the Pilgrims were forced into an early change when Tom Ward hobbled off with ankle damage.

Chances were at a premium before the break. Ryan Semple fired over from 20 yards, while White headed well wide following Chris Hall’s assist.

Marc Newsham linked neatly with Sleath to free Burrow, but the Chesterfield loanee could only curl an effort wide from 18 yards.

Visiting keeper Steve Hodgson made a terrific stop to keep out Newsham’s flying header, following Semple’s excellent cross from the left.

Kidsgrove created their first real opening at the beginning of the second half, with Walker heading over from Ashley Carter’s corner.

The Pilgrims stepped up a gear during the second period — but found the going tough against a dogged Kidsgrove side.

Semple’s deep cross found Hall, who saw a stabbed effort fumbled by Hodgson, but Newsham was unable to pounce

Burrow had a drive deflected behind following Semple’s deep cross, while Semple himself soon fired a 25-yard free-kick too high.

Walker was dismissed following a late challenge on Bastock and a naughty kick at Austin — and he had already escaped an earlier red card following a second clash with Bastock in between times.

Hodgson made a superb save to keep out Sleath’s close-range drive, before Andy Taylor somehow blocked the same player’s follow-up on the line.

Chances continued to arrive, with White heading over the top from two Ben Milnes’ corners, while a third effort was inadvertently blocked by Austin on the line.

Hodgson then made a top save to tip away Lee’s towering header from a Semple cross, as the Pilgrims were forced to settle for a replay at the Seddon Stadium.
