Four quickfire goals in 20 minutes from Zane Banton, Jemale McKenzie-Lowe, Arel Amu and Isaac Galliford saw Luton defeat the Pilgrims and progress to the second round proper on a wet Wednesday evening at The Jakemans Stadium.
Boston did have their chances with Aaron Eyett having a 25-yard free-kick tipped over the bar by Luton keeper Ben Barnes. After the break Louis Saebe, who tried to create all game against a physical Luton defence, skipped beyond his marker and hit a strike from the edge of the penalty area which looked destined to bend into the net.
But Barnes again pulled off a top one-handed stop to match the brilliance of Saebe’s effort and after a spirited second half performance from United, Miles Lynch was sent off for a crunching challenge.
Luton held firm to seal a trip to Gateshead in the second round.
